The Rapid Speech lesson helps users improve their ability to understand fast talkers. This exercise targets auditory processing speed and teaches the brain to fill in missing gaps when speech is delivered quickly.
What It Trains
This exercise strengthens the brain’s ability to:
- Understand speech delivered at a faster-than-average pace
- Fill in words that are missed due to speed
- Improve processing time for real-world conversations
- Maintain comprehension when speakers are less clear or speak quickly
Real-World Benefit
Many people can hear the sounds of speech but struggle to keep up when someone talks too fast. This is especially common with grandchildren, busy environments, or phone calls. Training with rapid speech builds confidence in these interactions.
How It Works
Each training segment plays a short sentence spoken quickly. After listening, users choose the correct sentence from four options on the screen.
The exercise:
- Uses time-compressed speech (up to 100% faster than normal)
- Allows a Replay if the sentence was missed the first time
- Does not gradually speed up across levels—the difficulty is controlled dynamically
Adaptive Compression
Lace AI Pro uses adaptive time-compression to challenge users based on performance:
- If correct, the next sentence may be slightly faster
- If incorrect, the system reduces speed slightly for the next round
This allows users to build tolerance for faster talkers at their own pace.
Voices Used
- Default Voice: A consistent female narrator is used to maintain clarity.
- Familiar Voices: If enabled, custom voices recorded by loved ones are used in a portion of the exercises to make training more personal and engaging.
Compression Scoring Thresholds
We score user performance based on the compression ratio (how fast the voice is speaking) at which they can still accurately select the correct sentence.
- A higher compression ratio means the user can follow faster speech.
- Performance contributes to the user’s Rapid Speech Score under My Progress > Assessments.
Tips for Success
- Use headphones to catch fast speech details
- Focus on the rhythm and intonation, your brain can fill in the blanks
- Don’t worry if it feels difficult, just like exercise, consistency improves results
