How can I use My Voices with different languages?

Understand how language and dialect settings affect which voices are available in Lace.

My Voices are designed to match the language settings of your profile. To ensure the best experience, a recorded voice must share the same base language as the user’s app settings.

Language vs. Dialect

The My Voices feature distinguishes between primary languages (e.g., English, Spanish, French) and regional dialects (e.g., Australian English vs. American English).

  • Dialects (Supported): If a voice is recorded in English, it will be available for use across all English regional settings, including English (US), English (UK), and English (AU).
  • Primary Languages (Requires New Recording): If you change your app's primary language (e.g., from English to Spanish), your saved English voices will no longer be available for use.

Why can’t I see my saved voices?

If your saved voices have disappeared, it is likely because your app is currently set to a different primary language than the one used when the voice was recorded.

For example:

  • If a friend records a voice in English, you can use that voice while your app is set to English (US) or English (AU).
  • If you switch your app language to Spanish (Mexico), that English voice will be hidden because it does not match your current language.

How to add a voice for a new language

To use a My Voice in a different primary language, you must initiate a new recording request:

  1. Set your app profile to the desired language (e.g., French).
  2. Send a new My Voice request to your friend or family member.
  3. Ensure the person recording selects the matching language (e.g., French) when prompted.
  4. Once completed, that voice will be available whenever your app is set to that language (including variants like French Canadian or France French).
